Valentine’s Day: Five of the Most Romantic World Records

On Valentine’s Day many people celebrate their feelings of love with flowers and chocolates, but there are some incredible world records that have taken romance and made it very big. Here we look at five of the most romantic world records:

Largest Underwater Wedding

u largest nderwater weddingsThe largest underwater wedding saw 303 divers attend the marriage ceremony of Polish couple Ewa Staronska and Pawel Burkowski whose wedding took place at the bottom of a lake at the Koparki Diving Base, Jaworzno, Poland, on August 27, 2011 during an event organised by a Polish company called Orka Group Ltd.

The wedding ceremony was lead by a local Catholic priest Father Pawel Wrobel, who is also a licensed diver. The ceremony lasted around 18 minutes with the couple and the priest communicating with each other underwater through the use of sign language and water proof texts whilst hundreds of diving guests looked on.

Longest Marriage

A couple from the USA, Herbert Fisher (born 1905) and Zelmyra Fisher (born 1907) were married on 13 May 1924 in North Carolina, USA. When Herbert died, aged 105, on 27 February 2011, the couple had been married 86 years, 9 months, and 16 days, breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest marriage. Zelmyra died in 2013, also aged 105 years old.

The couple had been neighbours and had grown up together and been best friends before marriage. They believe this helped them to maintain their marriage over a lifetime. Their focus throughout their marriage was always on the needs of their spouse and of their family for which they held their fondest memories. Their tips for a happy marriage include the advice to respect, support, and communicate with each other. Be faithful, honest, and true and love each other with all of your heart.

Zelmyra’s best Valentine’s Day memory was Herbert leaving work early and cooking her dinner, a surprise as Zelmyra was always the cook. Their advice for married couples is to remember that marriage is not a contest, so never keep a score, the two of you are together on the same team to win. Fight for what matters, and learn to bend, not break.

The world record is claimed by another couple married for 90 years, though this has yet to be officially recognised by Guinness World Records. Married at a Sikh ceremony on 11 December 1925, Karam and Katari Chand’s marriage took place in India when the country was under British rule. The couple moved to Bradford, England in 1965. Their happiness, like that of the Fishers, came from their family of eight children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Chand’s also said it was important in a happy marriage to have no secrets and no arguments. The marriage lasted 90 years and 291 days as Mr Chand died in 2016.

Largest Box Of Chocolate

Created to celebrate the launch of the chocolatier’s new brand of twist-wrapped chocolates called “Moments”, the replica of the new Thornton’s moments box stood 5.04 metres (16.5 feet) tall and 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) wide, with a depth of 1 metre (3.3 feet). Using the finest ingredients, including West African cocoa beans and 100 percent cocoa butter, the new moments range was said to offer a Thornton premium twist on individually wrapped chocolates, which included chocolate truffles, soft caramels, crunchy pralines, creamy fudges, orange crisps, and double chocolate croquants. The world record for the largest chocolate truffle belongs to the Sweet Shop USA in Mount Pleasant, Texas. The truffle was completed on 21 April 2017 and weighed 1,074.33 kg (2,368 lb 8 oz).

Sweet Shop USA, a family-owned chocolate business determined to preserve the American handmade chocolate craft, used the world record to mark their 44th anniversary and used their popular Milk Swiss Mint Truffle recipe using vast quantities of chocolate in a large dome-shaped mould. Having received official confirmation of their world record, the company took the chocolate truffle into their store for sale.
